Don’t forget the paper umbrellas!
The weather is finally beginning to reflect the season, which means that the time to stir up your own refreshing cooler is here. If you find yourself with an abundance of summer fruit and other possible (unnecessarily healthy) mixers but no beverage to impro–ahem, mix, them with, just pop in your postcode here on Drinkly– we’ll deliver any key cocktail component you find yourself missing. To get your summer started, we have even compiled a few of our favourite easy DIY drinks. From frozen daiquiris to frosty margaritas, here are five simple yet essential cocktail recipes that will transport you from your kitchen to a sandy beach in Mallorca.
Soak up the summer sun… and this berry booze.
- 500g strawberries
- 200g ice
- 100ml rum
- ½ lime to juice or lime cordial
For this recipe, you’re going to want to first hull and blend any summer strawberries you might have lying around. You could use a handful or two, but to be precise, around 500g will do best. After hulling them, simply blend the strawberries and sieve them to remove any seeds. Put the now-purée back in the blender with 200g or so of ice (Drinkly has you covered if you find yourself lacking in the ice department). Pour in the juice from your lime (if you don’t have a lime, no worries, just add in a couple capfuls of Rose’s Lime, a tasty cordial available here on Drinkly) and 100ml of rum– we recommend Bacardi’s aromatic white rum for this. Blend all of these ingredients together and voilà! Strawberry daiquiris ready to pour and serve.
This creamy coconut treat will satisfy your sweet tooth.
- 60ml white or coconut rum
- 60ml coconut cream/cream soda
- 120ml pineapple juice
This piña colada is almost too simple. Plug your handy dandy blender in, throw in some ice, and pour in 60ml of our beloved white Bacardirum (or if you’re really wanting to live the coconut dream, use Dead Man’s Fingers’ coconut rum for an extra coco-kick), 60ml of coconut cream (substitute with Drinkly’s Bon Accord cream soda for a fresh flavour), and 120ml of any pineapple juice you have left over in the fridge. Now you just blend it until it’s as smooth in texture as it is in flavour! Pour your finished coconut dream into a tall glass, stick in an umbrella and enjoy.
Sangria swirl margarita
An obligatory fruity blend for any summer soirée.
Ingredients for the sangria swirl:
- 250ml red wine (to freeze in ice cube tray)
- 30ml triple sec
- 15ml lime cordial
- ½ orange or around 35ml orange juice
Start this swirl by freezing around 250ml of red wine (we recommend a fruity Merlot) in an ice tray. After frozen, stick the wine cubes in a blender with 15ml of Rose’s Lime, the juice from your halved orange or 35ml of Sunpride orange juice, and Cointreau’s triple sec, our favourite. Blend and put this mixture aside to start on the margarita.
Ingredients for the margarita:
- 180ml lime cordial (frozen)
- 50ml tequila
- 25ml triple sec
Have your blender ready again and pour the tequila, triple sec, and frozen cordial into it with a bit of ice. Purée your margarita mix and pour into acouple of glasses, mixing the previously made sangria swirl evenly with it. For a real margarita feel, be sure to dip your glasses into the lime cordial first and rim them with salt or sugar!
A tangy twist on the traditional mojito.
- Handful of blackberries
- 4 teaspoons sugar
- 125ml tonic or soda water
- 60ml vodka
- 30ml lime cordial
- Mint leaves to taste
Muddle your blackberries, sugar, lime cordial, and mint leaves in a tall glass. Add in 125ml of Schweppes– soda water or tonic, 60ml of vodka (we recommend Smirnoff or Absolut), then some ice. Mix it all together well and there you have it– a blackberry mojito. It’s not as complicated as you thought to get so crafty, right? All the more reason to save yourself an unnecessary trip out and order with Drinkly.
Frozen rosé? Say no more.
- Bottle of dry rosé
- 300g strawberries
- 50g powdered sugar
- 1 lemon to juice
Freeze a bottle of dry rosé (Pongracz Brut works really well here) overnight. Hull, halve, and mix your strawberries with the sugar the following day and leave them to sit for half an hour. Blend your frozen rosé with the strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice (you can use a bit of lime cordial as a substitute here if you find yourself lemon-less). You can now pour yourself and your friends (or just keep it all to you and save some for later– you know you want to) this pink paradise.
There you have it! Five simple, delicious summer cocktails for you to kick back and relax with. No longer do you need to throw out those leftover fruits and mismatched ingredients you can’t use with anything.
