You’ve loved finding out more about Hannah and her business, SprEHd, so we’ve decided to introduce some more of the lovely retailers we work with every day. Our independent partners are what makes Shoply so unique – a versatile marketplace, where you can support your local food & drink businesses, and get what you need in 1 hour.
Meet Tariq Chishni, a shop owner going above and beyond for his community, to ensure no one has to go without their essentials, even during lockdown. We caught up with Tariq to find out more:
“I bought the business about seven years ago after having worked in recruitment for over ten years – I decided that I wanted to be my own boss and the stars aligned when I met the former owner, retired pro-footballer Billy McColl. At the time it was a traditional post office with a strong CTN (cards, tobacco and newsagent) offering. The decline in newspaper sales led to us having to rethink the business model. Over the years we have invested £20K in fitting out both the post office and general store, increasing our ranges to feature more grocery items, stationery, alcohol and chilled foods.
For a long time I’d thought about taking the business online but it just didn’t make financial sense to own and manage our own website. We joined Shoply because they gave us great advice on what to expect over the short and medium term, and how to help market the service. We generated orders on the platform even before we’d actively told any of our customers about it. Customers who would never have crossed the threshold of our store before are now ordering time and again through Shoply, so we’re reaching a whole new audience beyond our own neighbourhood.”
Tariq is extremely humble and forgets to mention he’s supported his community tirelessly during the pandemic, and even helped save some people’s lives! Read all about our local hero in his dedicated Glasgow Life article.
