On Wednesdays, We Drink Pink. . . Gin!

It’s gin o’clock, baby!

When it comes to being both fashionable and practical, pink gin always comes out on top.

Once upon a time…

The origin of pink gin is thought to lie within the Royal Navy. Plymouth gin is considered a ‘sweet’ gin in contrast to London gin, which is known as a ‘dry’ gin. It was mixed with some Angostura bitters by members of the Royal Navy as a means of making the bitters more enjoyable. This was all because Angostura bitters were used to treat seasickness in the 19th century. They then thought to bring the idea of mixing the bitters with the sweet gin back to bars in England, where it quickly became popular.

The rosy gin we love was made…

What is the process leading up to this pink perfection anyway? Well, our favourite beverage is actually quite simple to make. Pink gin is generally one part gin (usually Plymouth) with a dash of Angostura bitters. Although there aren’t really any great variations of the pink gin recipe, some bartenders like to add less or more of the bitters. The drink is usually topped up with iced water as well. So basically– they coat your chilled glass with the bitters and pour in your gin.

If you’re like most of us, however, you want a pink gin in the convenience of your own home. Thankfully, there are a lot of well-made pink gins on the market, and Drinkly is ready to deliver them chilled to your door in under an hour. Here are a few of our recommendations.

And now we live happily ever after!

Gordon’s Premium Pink Gin

Gordon’s Pink follows a recipe from the 1880s, and remains one of our favourites. This pink gin is an impressive improvement on the usual rosy drink, with its natural fruity flavours and hints of juniper. The sweetness of summer berries and its contrast to the tart redcurrant notes makes this gin unique in both its rosé colour and its exceptional flavour.

Beefeater Pink Gin

If you’re looking for a vibrant, contemporary gin– look no further. This strawberry gin from London is delicious and easy to drink. It is based on the award-winning Beefeater Dry recipe (mixed with strawberry flavours), with the result being a fresh and fruity blend of juniper, citrus, and sweet berry notes.

Eden Mill’s Love Gin

It’s all in the name! This famous light blush pink gin brings together an outstanding blend of local botanicals and exotic fruits to create its unique flavour profile. The key botanicals in Love Gin are rose petals and hibiscus. This gin is pale in its pink colour, and when diluted, sweet vanilla and floral notes are brought out.

Pink isn’t just a colour, it’s a way of life. So, pop in your postcode above and start living your best one. Did we mention that you can order some tonic with your pink gin to have an at-home pink and tonic? 50ml gin, 150ml tonic water– we’ve got you covered.
